Mount Angel Abbey Library

This summer, CBA members visited the Mount Angel Abbey Library. Our host, Brother Simon showed us all around the library, including the bindery where he works. He has literally evaluated every single book in the library to see if it needs repair.

The library’s “vault” contains illuminated books of hours, books as old as the 13th century, and other biblio-treasures. Victoria Ertelt showed us some of the highlights.

Everywhere you look, the library is full of interesting spaces and wonderful books. Julie Wallace of Portland’s Wallace Books seems to have found a good aisle…

The library was designed by famed architect Alvar Aalto, and walking around it was a pure pleasure. After the library tour, a walk around the campus for a few other sights, including a statue of St. Scholastica. Thank you, Brother Simon, for a memorable visit!
